Fabric Flowers

A friend came over with a design of fabric flowers and wanted to know how to make polymer clay centers for them. She never worked with the clay so we went over general guidelines for using it and I gave her some suggestions for making the centers. After she left I became curious about how many way s there were to maketo fabric flowers although she only used one design.
I must have browsed all the fabric flower sites on the internet and was surprized at the number of them. I tied making a few of them and tried some of my own and these are the results. A piece of round felt was sewed to the back and the pin was also sewed on. The polymer pieces were glued.

After she left I browsed the internet for fabric flowers wondering how many different ways there were for making them. I was surprized at the number of sites there were.

I tried some of the design shown on the internet and also made some of my own. Here are the results. I sewed a circle of felt to the back of the flowers and also sewed the pins on.

Blue Jacket

This jacket was made from a cotton jacquard fabric. I used a Mccall’s pattern in size 16 and it was a good fit except I had to shorten the sleeves but this is always the case.
I went to the Original Sewing and Quilt EXPO in Atlanta this month, be sure to go if there is one near you. I took a course on sewing techniques with Kathy Ruddy www.kathyruddy@earthlink.net and after the class had her fit me with a do it yourself shoulder pad kit. She showed me how to make my own shoulder pad and compensate for one shoulder being lower than the other. This is three projects into the future so I’ll let you know how it worked.

Polymer Clay Containers

Donna Kato in her book “The Art of Polymer Clay Millefiori Techniques” has an amazing method called the Klimt Cane. The design instead of being created by hand is actually done by the extruder. She makes a snake that will fit the extruder of different colored discs. Then using a large square disc she just extrudes the design. It extrudes in a long square snake and depending where you slice the snake the design changes. It’s one of those polymer clay miracles. I made a box for earrings and a vase like object for holding tools.

I’m pushing for spring here. The nests were done with an extruder and then the cords were stretched to make them even thinner. The eggs were formed on aluminum foil and the finish was speckled with paint.

Embroidered Velvet Handbag

This is the third bag I made from this pattern. It works well for me because its small but I added an extra pocket to the back. This time the front and back outside pockets are made from velvet. The embroidery is on the front pocket only. I like the pockets for keeping my call phone and car keys. The embroidery design is from Embroidery Library. The inside of the flap and the body of the bag are stabilized with iron on fleece. The inside of the bag has a contrasting lining.

Little Miss Alien

The idea for this doll came from the November, December issue of “Cloth Paper Scissors”.
I have misplaced my copy or I might have thrown it out with a pile of catalogues so I don’t have the designer’s name. She does have the pattern in that issue. The doll is made of muslin and then painted. There is no wiring in it but remains still. It was fun to make but what do I do with it now?

Polymer Clay Necklace and what I couldn’t do

I envisioined this necklace done with Chinese Knots which I become aware of from the newly published book “Elegant Knotted Jewelry” by Becky Meverden. I studied the knots, bought some heavy cord from Michaels, and entangled myself in a heap of knots. It was difficult so I went on the internet and printed out hand drawings of the knots. I found these easier to follow than photos. I was able to get to the last steps but when it came to pulling the knots together I lost it. I can’t do this as for now, and am leaving this for a future project unless someone can help me.
